You’ve likely read about the horror story that is the Flint Water Crisis, so what sort of contaminants might be in your drinking water?
Now the Environmental Working Group is offering a tool to help you find out with their Tap Water Database. If you live in the U.S., you can simply enter your zip code – or the name of the local utility – to find out the content of your tap water. EWG is an advocacy group focused on public health and environmental studies.
The new tool is built on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) testing data on drinking water samples taken from 2010 to 2015. It includes test data on water from nearly 50,000 water utilities in all 50 states.
While levels of contaminants in drinking water are covered by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act or state regulations, EWG says they discovered that the “vast majority” of water utilities meet these regulations. The sobering finding of these studies and data is that contaminant levels are higher than what current research suggests is safe for a number of elements. As an example, the EPA’s limit for arsenic in water is 100 parts per billion (ppb), but the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment says just 4 parts per trillion – or 0.004 ppb – would be a more reasonable level.

The bottom line is that the EWG says people should use water filters, and to that end, they offer a number of recommendations for types of water filters which would help purify local tap water supplies.
